A surplus crop in 2008 caused changes to the National market for grapes, which has, in turn, had an affect on wineries. Bob Wersen, owner of the Tassel Ridge Winery near Leighton says it’s normal for his winery to be mostly self-sufficient, but says Tassel Ridge had a large harvest as well last year, meaning he will buy significantly fewer grapes from California and also be selling more fruit this year than normal. Wersen adds that while Tassel Ridge is mostly dependent upon their own grape supply, they do buy some juices from regions in New York and Michigan for their wines.
