“I didn’t do it just to do it. I did it because my life was in danger.” That’s what 39-year-old Knoxville resident Steven Dean McGinnis told law enforcement in September, 2008, the night Robert Ohl was found dead from multiple shotgun wounds. McGinnis is claiming self-defense and other defenses in his murder trial, which began this week. On Tuesday Robert Ohl’s wife, Rhonda Ohl, testified that she had a no-contact order on her husband at one time. However, McGinnis told law enforcement that Ohl was sitting in a chair outside McGinnis’ trailer right before the shooting. “I know I couldn’t take him hand to hand,” McGinnis later said. On Wednesday, a medical doctor testified that no alcohol or illegal drugs were in Ohl’s system at the time of his death. The trial will resume next week. KNIA/KRLS News will bring you more information as soon as it becomes official.
