Although recent reports say interest in parent-teacher organizations, or PTOs, has declined state-wide over the years, PTO organizations in Marion County remain strong and active. Linda Abbott, principal of Northstar Elementary in Knoxville, says the school’s PTO is a major sponsor of field trips, and helps raise money for playground and technology equipment. Mark Wittmer, Pella Schools Superintendent, says their PTO is very active, particularly at the elementary level, while more parents of middle and high school students tend to find ways to help out with the activities their children are involved in. Both Wittmer and Abbott encourage parents to check out their school’s PTO.
