Some students at Pella High School are getting some “hands-on” experience outside of the traditional classroom setting; and making a difference in the community at the same time. The Construction Trades class – a new course this fall – has thirteen seniors learning everything from reading blueprints to proper construction techniques as they help build a house for Habitat for Humanity. Instructor Mark Goodrich says the idea for the course got off the ground with help from Pella High School Principal Mark Lee, and says the unique experience has been rewarding. Seniors Tyler Van Wyk and Pat Nunnikhoven tell KNIA/KRLS news they’ve enjoyed the opportunity to do work outside of the school and say they’ve been impressed with the progress made on the home, which is going up near the intersection of Oskaloosa and Prairie Streets. The course is also dual-enrolled, meaning students are earning both high school and college credit.
