Iowa lawmakers have offered up plenty of criticisms, and even a few preferred options to Governor Culver’s 10% across-the-board cut in state spending, but one local lawmaker is saying that with a decision made, it will likely be the task of the Iowa House and Senate to remedy the issue.
Jim Van Engelenhoven, a Republican Representative from Pella says he’s not convinced that a special session this summer or fall would have helped, and assumes that the problem-solving will be the duty of the lawmakers when the legislative session convenes.
Senate Republican Leader Paul McKinley adds that he believes the Governor should have made specific cuts to the state budget, rather the use a broad slash to correct what he views as years of government over-spending. In related news, McKinley says if former Governor Terry Branstad officially runs for Governor, McKinley will remain the legislature, working to return the Republicans to a majority in the senate.
