After a sluggish first half that included several penalties and little offense, the Pella football team was able to find some success in the final two quarters to pick up all three of their scores in a 21-0 win over Norwalk Friday night. The first score of the game came in the third quarter on an electric 45-yard run from senior running back Bret Bogaard, who has served as a spark plug for the Little Dutch more than once this season.

“Bret’s got some speed, and he’s got some hard-nosedness to him,” said Pella Head Football Coach Jay McKinstrey. “The line created some seams for him to make the play and make the run, and when he gets through, he’s got that burst of speed and he can certainly make that big play for us. He can provide that spark or that energy to the football team.”

Pella’s final two scores came on goal line runs in the fourth quarter by Matt “Bubba” Meyers. In all, though, Pella picked up just 207 yards of total offense, with 153 of that coming on the legs of Bogaard.

Quarterback Blaine Forsythe completed 5-of-11 passes, but for just 29 yards, and seemed to miss leading receiver Richie Bales, who left the game in the second quarter with a potentially serious leg injury.

The bright spot on the night for Pella was their defense, which played strong enough to earn the shut-out; holding the Warriors to 125 total yards. Pella finishes the regular season at 6-3 overall and will face Williamsburg in the Substate round of the playoffs on Wednesday.
