Schools Search for Options in Covering State Funding Cuts

Posted By News On October 23, 2009 @ 6:27 am In Today’s Local News | Comments Disabled

School boards around the state are looking for ways to make up for ten percent less in state funding that they’ll receive, following the Governor’s announcement of across-the-board cuts. One option is increasing property taxes, but Pella Schools Superintendent Mark Wittmer says the district will not seek a property tax hike this year, but will instead absorb much of the nearly one million dollars less in state funding by utilizing the district’s cash reserves. Wittmer adds that other ways to save, including cutting back on travel and energy usage will also be considered. Knoxville Schools Business Manager Craig Mobley says additional options on how to raise revenue as well as cut expenses for this coming school year are all on the table, with more discussion expected from the school board at their meeting next week.
