A student at Central College is spearheading a fundraiser that will help others reduce their impact on the environment. Ted Dirkx, a junior Environmental Studies major, is a member of SUSTAIN, which is selling compost tumblers and rain barrel wastewater dispensers. Both items can help minimize waste.

“Efficiency in today’s society has never been more important, due to the implications of climate change and environmental degradation,” says Dirkx. “Conserving our waste products is a crucial step in the process of attaining those goals of [minimizing] climate change and environmental degradation,” says Dirkx.

SUSTAIN is a campus-wide organization at Central College that offers opportunities for people from different areas to develop projects and make recommendations to the help the college and the wider world more environmentally sustainable. Dirkx previously built the compost tumblers for the organic garden almost completely from recycled materials and used them to turn coffee grounds from the campus café into compost. Proceeds from the sale of the items will benefit the Central College organic garden. To find out more, you can contact Dirkx at 515-249-8236 or e-mail him at dirkxt1@central.edu.
