Workers contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Red Rock recently conducted exploratory drilling at the base of the north end of the Lake Red Rock dam. John Holt with the Corps of Engineers tells KNIA/KRLS that five holes were drilled in the “grout curtain” which lies in the bedrock below the dam. The grout curtain is essentially concrete injected into the bedrock to make it impervious to water.

Holt says the surveillance is routine, and is normally scheduled by Geological Technicians with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Rock Island, Illinois. He adds that the procedure was done earlier than normal to take advantage of available Federal Flood Recovery funding. Analysis of the findings is not yet complete.
