Several reports from around the state indicate that wet weather and a late harvest have depleted in the supply of liquid propane – which is used in drying grain – but is that the case locally? Tracy Gathman, General Manager of Two Rivers Cooperative in Pella says area farmers have been fortunate to be further along in the harvest than elsewhere in Iowa, and local supplies of LP are sufficient at this time.

The reason for the shortage, Gathman says, is that the liquid propane pipeline can only push a certain amount of product to a distribution point at one time. Gathman adds there should be more liquid propane available by the time cold weather sets in. As far as the local harvest is concerned, Gathman estimates that nearly all of the soybeans are out of the fields, while the corn harvest is approximately 90 percent complete.
