Knoxville officials continue to work with the Department of Natural Resources and other agencies to improve the city Wastewater Treatment Plant. Public Works Director Jeff May says although the plant did receive ammonia violations from the DNR in the past five years, it has no violations so far this year, and is running efficiently and in compliance. May says a majority of the past violations had to do with an isolated incident in 2004 when the city tried to increase the amount of ammonia-killing bacteria in the plant in 2004, but factors instead caused an unexpected increase in ammonia. May says the city is working with the DNR to make possible additions on the plant, which hinge on the DNR issuing the city a new permit and completing future designs, among other factors.
