Building a successful athletics program at the high school level takes a lot of work, dedication, and commitment by many people beyond just the coaches and athletes that play the sport. One major piece of that success is the role of a parent. Each year at the State Volleyball tournament the IGHSAU allows each participating school to nominate one person to receive the Sportsmanship award for their school. Wednesday night prior to the start of Pella’s mach with Marion, Lisa Vandelune received that award for Pella. Vandelune has been a longtime supporter and advocate for volleyball in Pella and she says she was honored to receive the award. Vandelune helped start a Pella volleyball club several years ago when her daughter Jordyn was younger to help get kids involved in competitive volleyball at a younger age, which has been a big part of building the success Pella’s high school program enjoys today, just coming off of their fourth consecutive straight State Tournament appearance, and she’s a former Pella volleyball head coach. She says she believes her role as a parent is to support the program no matter what. Vandelune’s daughter Jordyn, a four year starter for Pella, played her final match in a Pella uniform Wednesday night. You can hear the full interview with Vandelune Wednesday night on the PM Sports Page on KNIA/KRLS.
