Senate Republican Leader Paul McKinley announced Friday he is withdrawing his candidacy in Iowa’s governor race. The Chariton Republican, who has said he would withdraw from the race if former Governor Terry Branstad officially entered, says he will focus on winning back a Republican majority in the Iowa Senate, as Branstad has been gearing up to challenge Democratic Governor Chet Culver next year.
