The approaching cold weather season is typically the most popular time for food drives for local food shelves, but it’s also the time when those items are in the greatest demand. JoNes Van Hecke, director of the Pella Food Shelf says those wanting to help with donations should consider the items they enjoy in their own homes.

“When you think about it, it’s really the kinds of foods that your typical family likes to eat. Those are the things that we always run out of,” says VanHecke. “Peanut Butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese, breakfast cereals, oatmeal… I know that our families with kids love it when we have granola bars to make available. You know, it’s kind of thing that we love to receive at the Pella Food Shelf.”

Donations to the Pella Food Shelf can be dropped off at its location at the Peace Lutheran Church on East Vermeer Road in Pella, or VanHecke can be contacted directly at 628-5249. KNIA/KRLS has also started our fall food drive, which will collect items for the Pella Food Shelf and other food donation locations in Marion County. Help us fill the Big Red Radio with food, and together we’ll fill the food shelves of Marion County.
