The Pella Christian girls showed major improvements in all areas with a 34-28 win at South Tama to open up Little Hawkeye Conference play last night. South Tama had a major height advantage inside and out rebounded the Eagles but Pella Christian played tough defense and were much more poised offensively in the win. Coach Kevin Van Maanen said they knew they were outsized but he was really proud of the girls effort all night long.[simage=1078,200,y,right]
The Eagles held a 7-5 lead after one quarter and held South Tama to just one second quarter point to gain a 14-6 halftime advantage. That second quarter proved to be the difference as the Trojans actually outscored the Eagles 22-20 in the second half. Van Maanen was also very pleased with how they took care of the basketball committing just 13 turnovers unofficially compared to over 30 in their loss to PCM. He says it’s still early in the season and they still have things to improve on but they definitely looked much better last night. Jasmin Schelhaas led the Eagles with 15 points including three three pointers and Bekah Posthuma added nine points as the Eagles improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the LHC. Pella Christian is off until Saturday but then have three tough games in four days and two are on the road. They host Lynnville Sully Saturday, then travel to defending Class 3A State champion Ballard Monday and play at Knoxville Tuesday.
