For the first time in the last two weeks, the Pella girls basketball team found themselves in a relatively tight ball game last night, but were able to come away with a 47-41 victory against visiting South Tama. Lady Dutch Head Coach Jerod Garland says he was pleased with the way the team responded when the Trojans came back late in the game.
“We were pleased to have a really close game and have to deal with adversity,” said Garland. “I think we were up [by] 14 in the third quarter, and they made a run to get it down to three, and I thought our girls handled that challenge really, really well.”
Pella held a comfortable 25-13 lead at halftime, before South Tama’s post players made their presence felt in the paint and on the glass during a second-half comeback. It was another very even night in the scoring column for the Lady Dutch, with guards Mackenzie Vander Molen, Lindsay Bentzinger and Courtney Kelderman all totaling nine points. Hali Steenhoek and Kelsey Fynaardt were close behind with 8 points apiece, and Steenhoek led Pella with eight rebounds. The Dutch are now 4-1, with a trip to Grinnell on Tuesday up next on the schedule.
