College football bowl games and New Year’s Eve parties will provide plenty of opportunities to celebrate the final day of 2009, and the Pella Police Department wants to make sure everyone is able to enjoy 2010 as well. Lieutenant John VanHaaften says the Pella Police Department will be one of nearly 300 Iowa law enforcement agencies taking part in a Special Traffic Enforcement Program to watch for impaired drivers.

The “STEP” wave, as it is known, utilizes funds from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau to put more officers on streets and highways to reduce dangerous driving practices such as speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and driving under the influence. Lieutenant VanHaaften adds that the law is in place to keep people safe and says if there is any doubt that a person is below the legal limit to drive, then they should not get behind the wheel.
