Governor Chet Culver shared the 2011 fiscal year budget during the legislative session this week. The proposed budget includes savings of $341 million, of which $52 will come from tax credits. Local senator Paul McKinley of Chariton says “Senate Republicans are not interested in supporting a state budget that merely shifts the tax burden onto property taxes”. McKinley states that the state of Iowa has overspent significantly over the past three years. He says it is critical to balance to budget but increasing taxes is not an option considering Iowa already has the 6th highest property tax in the nation. For more from Senator McKinley about his thoughts on the current legislative session tune in to Monday’s Let’s Talk Knoxville during the midday magazine.
