The Pella Police Department has a new piece of equipment to use for specific cases, thanks to the support of a local organization. Crisis Intervention Services applied for the grant to equip Pella Police Officer Paul Haase with a “VidMic”, which clips onto his shoulder like a regular radio microphone, but also captures photos, video and audio.

The unit cost nearly $1,000 and can record up to three hours of content. The microphone handset features a small LCD display on the back side of the microphone, and the VidMic’s content can be uploaded to a computer via a USB port.

Officer Haase is a member of the Pella Police Department’s sexual assault and domestic abuse response teams, and can use the VidMic to help document domestic or sexual abuse cases. He has been carrying the device for around a month now. The grant that Crisis Intervention Services received also allowed them to purchase the same piece of equipment for other law enforcement agencies in the area, including the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
