More winter weather is headed toward Marion County and South Central Iowa. The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a winter storm watch, which is in effect from late Saturday night through late Sunday night.

Snow accumulations of as much as six to twelve inches are expected across southern Iowa, starting late Saturday night, with the heaviest snow expected Sunday afternoon and evening.

Visibility reductions to under one half mile can be expected during the period of heavy snow Sunday afternoon and night with snowfall rates around an inch per hour at times. Winds will increase later Sunday night into Monday. Winds speeds of 20 to 25 mph will produce considerable drifting and snow blowing snow with reduced visibility.

Travel will become increasingly difficult Sunday into Sunday night as roads become snow packed and slippery. Blowing snow Sunday night into Monday will also produce hazardous conditions.

The Marion County Engineers Office is urging residents in rural areas, particularly on gravel roads, to stock up on food and medical supplies, as strong winds are expected to accompany the coming storm and roads may not be cleared for several days.
