A proposed ban on text-messaging while driving was earlier introduced by Iowa lawmakers in the current legislative session. Pella Police Lieutenant John VanHaaften says while he agrees that the practice of text messaging while driving is unwise, he is concerned about enforcing the law.

“Enforcement, in my view, would be very, very difficult,” said VanHaaften. “It’s a great concept, and it’s an appropriate concern, but again I saw law enforcement’s role as being very difficult.”

Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada echoes that sentiment, adding that for the many drivers who will attempt to skirt the law, banning text messaging specifically could actually be more dangerous.

“To narrow it down to texting, I think you’re going to encourage people to try and be more deceptive about the practice,” said Losada. “And those that are being more deceptive will actually be a worse driver, so that’s my concern here.”

Both officers agreed that increased awareness and education on the dangers of text messaging while driving may be the best way to keep drivers safe.
