A light snowfall and cold winds made for slick roads in Marion County Monday, resulting in several accidents. A serious two vehicle accident occurred at Metcalf Corner on T-15 just before 4pm. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that they received a call of a head on collision in the 1200 block of T-15 at 3:43 PM. The Knoxville Rural Fire Department, Knoxville City Rescue, Pella Ambulance, Pella Police Department, the Marion County Sheriff’s office and Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene. A 2003 Chevy truck driven by Michael Wathem of Knoxville was southbound on T-15 south of the Red Rock Dam when it hit a patch of ice and slid sideways into a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Nicholas Bates, also of Knoxville. Wathem was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Pella Regional Hospital and was later flown to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines via Life Light. Wathem is listed as in stable condition. The driver of the other vehicle, Nicholas Bates, suffered no serious injuries and declined transport. There were no other passengers in the vehicles.
