The Pella Public Library is encouraging area middle and high school students to sign up for “Amazing Race: Pella Edition.” The contest will take place on Thursday and involves challenges at the Pella Aquatic Center, Art Center and Pella Library.

“It first starts out with a swimming challenge [at the Pella Aquatic Center], and then we will actually transport the contestants with city transportation back to the Pella Library and Community Center area,” says Pella Youth Services Librarian Katie Dreyer – who helped organize the event.

“Then they will have to do the Dutch dance that will be performed during the record-breaking attempt at Tulip Time, which will be judged by the mayor [Darrell Dobernecker]. He will give them a pass/fail score, and then they can move on to the next challenge. There will also be an art challenge and an obstacle course, and then they’ll [contestants] will finish up at the library with a scavenger hunt challenge using the resources we have at the library.”

Dreyer says it was a rewarding experience to create an event involving multiple departments in the city of Pella.

“It’s been a lot of fun trying to get this together and using a lot of the different city departments and what the whole city [of Pella] has to offer,” said Dreyer. “So it’s been a lot of fun to collaborate on this with different departments.”

Sterling Physical Therapy of Pella is sponsoring the event. The two person teams must be in at least sixth grade and need to register in the Community Services office of the Pella Community Center. There is a $5 fee per team to register for “Amazing Race: Pella Edition”, which will start at 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
