The Central College softball team picked up a big win over St. Thomas (Minnesota) Saturday afternoon, thanks to a gutsy decision to bunt in the final inning. With the game tied 2-2, Dutch Head Coach George Wares instructed sophomore Holly Von Fumetti to lay down a bunt in the seventh inning with the bases loaded. The decision proved to be the right one, and Central secured a vindicating 3-2 win over the Tommies to even out the performance on the first day of play in Panama City, Florida. The Dutch were blanked 3-0 by Denison (Ohio) earlier in the day.

The Central College softball team is ranked No. 20 in this week’s NFCA Division III poll and will complete pool play in the 24-team Leadoff Classic Saturday against No. 16 Christopher Newport (Virginia). Teams will the be placed in the Gold, Silver and Bronze tournament brackets, based on pool play results with first round games set for Saturday afternoon.
