After leading Central College to its first Iowa Conference men’s basketball championship in 15 seasons, senior Miguel Ley has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Mike Boschee has been tabbed as the coach of the year. Dutch senior Loren Liming was a first-team all-conference selection and senior Mark Holan was a second-team choice.
Ley, the second-leading scorer in Central history with 1,545 career points, is averaging 18 points per game this year, ranking third in the league. Ley is the first player from Central to earn conference MVP honors since 1992. Liming ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 17 points a game and is second in rebounding with nine per game. Holan set a new school season record with 64 steals, 17 more than any other league player. He is averaging 12 points per game.
Boschee was cited after piloting the Dutch to a 14-2 league record and a 23-4 overall mark, setting a school record for season victories a year after going 13-13. He’s in his seventh season at Central. Boschee instilled a staunch defense-oriented approach and the Dutch led the league in field goal percentage defense (39.4 percent), 3-point percentage defense (30.5), blocks (4.6), steals (8.9) and scoring margin (plus 7.8). Central won its first outright men’s basketball crown since 1984-85 and its 16th overall. The Dutch are making their ninth NCAA Division III playoff appearance, the most of any league school. Central travels to St. Louis for a first-round game against Illinois Wesleyan Friday at 6 p.m.
