More precipitation is headed toward Marion County, and it’s expected into include the white, flaky variety. True to form for an Iowa March, a system that is anticipated to bring a significant amount of precipitation and temperatures in the thirties will come on the heels of sunshine and sixty degree temperatures. State climatologist Harry Hillaker says a wide band of precipitation will be moving through the state.

“The Knoxville/Pella area looks to be right in the middle of that at the moment, forecasting maybe an inch to a little more than an inch of precipitation early this weekend,” says Hillaker. “[It will] probably start off as rain and then turning to snow, perhaps, toward the end of the event. Temperature-wise it’s a little hard to tell how much accumulation there might actually be, but there could be some accumulation across some areas of the state.”

Hillaker adds that with many of the state’s waterways already swollen or above flood stage, there will certainly be a concern of flooding that could follow the system as it moves out of Iowa.
