A fundraiser designed by a kindergarten student in Pella raised over $2,300 for children in Haiti. Titus Hopkins and his mother created a fundraiser that had participants pay a small fee to enter a Lego building contest, with prizes awarded to the top creations, as voted upon by the public. 83 creations were submitted and over 250 people cast votes to select their favorites in four age categories at Marion County Bank in Pella.
Congratulations to the winners:
K-2 Grade: “Power Miner Big Ship” by Hunter Kephart.
3-5 Grade: “Combine” by Brett Maasdam
6-8 Grade: “Devastator”
High School: “Lego Bricks in the Abstract” by Shaun Van Weelden
Hopkins’s Lego fundraiser also gained attention from state and national media and spawned similar contests in Marcy, New York, and San Jose, California – which sent a $100 check to Pella to benefit Many Hands for Haiti. Many Hands for Haiti supports the work of Jared and Stacey Nikkel and family. The Nikkels, who are originally from Pella, moved to Haiti in June of 2009 to serve as missionaries.
Joining Marion County Bank in supporting the fundraiser was Koopman Construction, Recker Dental and Pizza Ranch.
