The melting of all of this winter’s snowfall, coupled with a pair of recent precipitation events has the water level at Lake Red Rock well above normal, but the reservoir is serving its purpose. John Holt, Assistant Operations Manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the lake is around 27 feet above its normal pool, which has the reservoir holding approximately sixty percent of its maximum capacity. Holt says that accurate predictions on the impact of the snow melt helped reduce significant flooding along the Des Moines River, but says Red Rock will need time to discharge all of the stored water in order to be ready for spring rains.
