Posted By News On April 5, 2010 @ 6:30 am In Today’s Local News | Comments Disabled

Today marks the first day of Severe Weather Awareness Week and is focused on building awareness about flash flooding. According to the National Weather Service, more deaths occur each year due to flooding than any other thunderstorm related hazard, resulting in more than 140 fatalities annually. A flash flood is defined as a rapid rise of water along a stream or low-lying urban area and are capable of tearing out trees, destroying buildings and bridges and trigger catastrophic mud slides. Almost half of all flash flood related fatalities occur in vehicles and motorists are encouraged to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” when approaching a flooded road.
