Wednesday’s focus for Severe Weather Awareness Week is tornadoes, and cities across the state will be hosting drills utilizing their outdoor warning systems at 10:10 this morning. Marcia Slycord, Communications Supervisor with the Pella Police Department, says the City of Pella has eight outdoor warning sirens placed throughout the community to maximize their effectiveness.

Slycord adds that the Pella Police Department is notified of a tornado warning by the Emergency Alert System (EAS), which is the same system that the National Weather Service uses to inform KNIA/KRLS Radio of any severe weather that poses a threat to Marion County and the surrounding area.

Due to water damage to the Communication Center at the Public Safety Complex in Pella, there may not be a scheduled tornado drill this morning in the city of Pella. Slycord says she will notify KNIA/KRLS of any possible changes to today’s schedule.

Additionally, tornado sirens will not be sounded this morning if severe weather is present. Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS News for further information.
