Hundreds of volunteers showed up at the Vermeer Global Pavilion in Pella Saturday to help make the “Pella Meals from the Heartland” food-packaging event a success. Despite starting the day in need of more help in the afternoon, vacancies in the volunteer workforce quickly filled, as roughly 1000 people helped the event’s organizers exceed their goal of packaging over 400,000 meals. It was the first time that Meals from the Heartland had held a food-packaging event outside of the Des Moines Metro area.

The KNIA/KRLS Big Red Radio was also there, playing music and providing updates for participants. All of the food packaged will aid victims of the earthquakes that struck Haiti in January.
