The Central College men’s golf team closed out the 2010 season with a pair of birdies on the final hole to finish in a tie for 17th place in the NCAA Division III Championships Friday. The team’s two seniors, Andrew Townsend and Justin Smool went one under par for the last whole at the Hershey Links Golf Course, to finish in 32nd and 34th places, respectively. Top-ranked Methodist just got past Guilford 1177 to 1178 to claim the team title. Overall, the Dutch shot a 1221, which tied them with Nebraska Wesleyan at 17th place out of the 37-team field. Central finished 19th at the NCAA Tournament last year. 2010 was a good season for the tradition-rich Central men’s golf team, which won its 28th Iowa Conference Championship and made its 29th NCAA tournament appearance in the past 35 years. The program will have a new leader in the fall, when former Maryville University coach Chad Green takes over for interim coach Clint Brown.
