The Knoxville City Council heard from the Graceland Cemetery Advisory Commission at their meeting this week about the possibility of adding columbaria to the cemetery. Ray Bertrand spoke on behalf of the Cemetery Board and said there is a growing nationwide trend for the columbaria, because they are a less-expensive option than above ground headstones for cremation remains. A columbarium is a wall-like structure with niches for the placement of cinerary urns. The council instructed the commission to do further research on the size of columbaria that would be appropriate for the cemetery and report back with a recommendation.
