Well over 2500 people danced their way into the record books Saturday morning in Pella on the final day of the 2010 Tulip Time festival. The participants, wearing wooden shoes and performing a simple Dutch dance, surrounded the downtown square and beyond, holding the dance for five minutes. Amy VanHaaften, who served on the steering committee for the wooden shoe dance, was amazed at how successful the event turned out.
“I can remember having some meetings earlier this winter, and we were like ‘Oh, will we ever get to 500, will we ever get to 1000,’ and just as the time came closer and the numbers grew and grew, we just never, ever imagined that it would be this successful,” said VanHaaften afterwards.
The official number of dancers who participated will have to be tallied and will later be released, but will surely be well in excess of the previous record of 475. The dance will officially be recorded by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest “clog dance”. Verification of the record will be received by the committee in a few weeks.
