The Pella boys golf team struggled on a very tough course at The Harvester Golf Club and sits in seventh place after day one of the Class 3A Boys State Golf Meet.

Pella shot a 340 and despite their struggles could still manage a top five finish with a good day today as they are only nine strokes out of fifth. Spencer shot a 320 and leads the nine team field, three time defending state champions Ballard are second with a 323, and Decorah is third with a 325.

Pella was led by Lucas Boyd who shot a 79 and is part of a five way tie for seventh place individually, but only four strokes behind the leader Devin Leland of Ballard who shot a 75. Other scores in the top four for Pella included Andy Vanderbroek and Beau VanderSluis each with an 84 and Conner Kelderman with a 93.

Coach Gifford Graham says the course played very tough and got the best of them on day one, but feels confident they can come back and finish strong today. The final 18 holes will be played today with the first group of players teeing off at 8am.
