A substate match-up between two area programs quickly became a runaway last night, as the Pella boys routed PCM 11-0 in Pella. The Mustangs’ defense held the game scoreless for the first ten minutes of play, but Pella’s speed and passing quickly overcame the PCM defense, as the Little Dutch were able to go up 5-0 at intermission.

While continuing to cycle in fresh players, Pella kept the pressure on PCM in the second half, on their way to tallying six more goals and earning the victory. Pella Head Coach Mark Solomon said he was particularly pleased with the offense’s ability to finish opportunities around the goal.

“We’ve had some times this season where, regardless of how well things were working up front, the finishing touch just wasn’t there; and tonight we had that,” said Solomon. “So I was able to work in every single guy on my roster for some real quality playing time and – at the same time – secure a really good shutout, so we’re very happy.”

Deckar Lynch led Pella with a three-goal performance, while captain Blaine Forsythe had two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Nic Gerdes had a clean sheet for the night. Pella will now face Knoxville in the substate finals. The game has been moved from Grinnell to Pella, and will be played at noon Saturday at the Gene Van Wyk Soccer Complex.
