Pella Public Works Still Busy After Tulip Time

As Saturday night’s final performance on the Tulip Toren was winding down, the Pella Public Works Department was already beginning the clean-up process from the 75th Annual Tulip Time festival. Public Works Director Denny Buyert says the clean-up is mostly a reverse process of getting ready for the event.
“Now it’s just back to picking those things up,” says Buyert. “The extra garbage cans, the barricades, a lot of the extra sign posts that we put in for directional signage during the event – we get everything clean-up and put away for next year.”
Buyert says he’s always impressed by the number of people that pull together to make Tulip Time a success, and wanted to recognize the efforts of one of the city’s departments specifically.
“Our big department that does the majority of the work is the Street Department, under Doug Riggen as the superintendent,” said Buyert. “They’ve done it for many years, [and] they’ve got it down. There’s a lot of meetings prior to Tulip Time, during Tulip Time, and just the physical labor it takes to do it all.”
City workers repaired and cleaned streets prior to the event, and maintained garbage removal for well over 100 garbage cans in the Central Business District during the event, among other tasks.
