Republican Secretary of State candidate Matt Schultz met with a small group of Marion County residents Thursday afternoon.   Schultz tells KNIA/KRLS news he first decided to run for the Secretary of State position because he’s concerned about the future of our children in Iowa.  He says with unemployment at a 23 year high, the state needs someone who is an advocate for business to help bring jobs to Iowa.

Another issue Schultz says he’s concerned about is voter fraud.   If elected, he says the first thing he would do is require photo identification at the polls.  He believes Iowans should have to provide valid identification the same way they are required to in order to board an airplane, open a checking account or make a purchase with a personal check.  In addition, Schultz says he would reform same-day voter registration to require provisional ballots so that voters can still register and vote at the polls but will their ballots will need to be verified to make sure they are who they say they are and are eligible to vote.  Finally, Schultz adds that he also wants to institute a crime stoppers hotline for voter fraud.  So if someone sees “funny business” at the polls they can call in and report it, and if that results in a conviction the individual who made the report will be offered an award.  Simply put, Schultz says people need to be held accountable.

When asked what sets him apart from the other Republican candidates, Schultz says the fact that he is the only candidate with children gives him a unique perspective and the fact that he has been successful in his last four elections also shows he has the necessary experience.  Schultz says if he does not win the primary in June he will support the endorsed Republican candidate, but believes he brings a unique dynamic to the table.

Matt Schultz has been a City Councilman in Council Bluffs since 2005, where he lives with his wife and three children.  He will face Republicans George Eichhorn and Chris Sanger in the June 8th primary election.
