The Knoxville City Council approved the costs of a unique crosswalk design at their meeting Monday.  Public Works Director Jeff May sent a recommendation to the council to approve checkered crosswalk at Highway 14 and Rock Island.  City Manager Dick Schrad says the project is in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Knoxville Nationals and the raceway’s predominance in the city.  The markings will be made from a thermoplastic material that is installed by heating the material and melting them onto the pavement.  The cost of the 8 foot wide checkered crosswalk is $2,608 but Schrad says the special application should last longer than the paint that is normally used for regular crosswalks.
