A resolution authorizing a consent order from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was approved at Tuesday night’s Pella City Council meeting. The resolution officially accepted mandates from the DNR regarding the city’s sanitary sewer system, which the council has been discussing for many months. Pella Police Chief and Assistant City Administrator Michael Marcinkowski says the resolution was significant for a pair of reasons.

“There’s two things that are very important about it,” said Marcinkowski. “One, they gave us a year’s extension – which means that this does not have to be completed until October of 2013 – and the other is the expense of this.”

The project carries a nearly $3.5 million price tag and will be done in two phases, which include a new collection basin and lift station improvements, along with additional replacements.
