Pella native and NBA player Kyle Korver made a return to his hometown Tuesday in support of a unique fundraiser organized by a local youth. Through the sale of his own line of t-shirts that support the Kyle Korver Foundation, Korver was helping raise money for an orphanage in Sierra Leone – a cause that was chosen by 11-year-old Kobe Diers of Pella. Korver said when he heard of the effort made by Diers, he was immediately impressed and says he enjoyed the chance to meet Kobe and help out.

“Just having someone so young think of an idea that big and come through and actually make it happen is incredible,” said Korver. “And then you actually meet him, and he’s even better than what you thought. He’s a really humble kid, really nice and loves basketball, and we’re just glad that we could help out a little bit.”

Diers raised nearly $2,500 to purchase basketball hoops for the orphanage by collecting pledges for every three-point basket he made in the month of April; and with Korver’s help, a new objective was set to also build more shelter for the orphans. The connection to Pella lies with Kobe’s mother, who had visited the orphanage in Sierra Leone on a mission trip.

Korver signed several autographs and posed for pictures with supporters at the Sports Page Sporting Goods store in Pella, with all of the proceeds from the sale of his SEER clothing line going to support the fundraiser. Everyone who purchased a t-shirt was also entered into a raffle for one of two Utah Jazz jerseys autographed by Kyle, who drew Tyler Ter Louw and Kara Vander Werff as the winners.
