The Pella girls soccer team resumed play in the Class 1-A, Region 6 tournament last night, beginning action with a penalty kick and not looking back after that. The game had been suspended due to severe weather on Tuesday evening and began with Beth Van Wyk converting the PK, which stemmed from a hard foul from Oskaloosa’s keeper on Maria Mate-Kodjo.
Van Wyk would add another goal three minutes later on an assist from Hannah Vollmar, while Morgan Elzinga would tack on two more goals in the 19th and 24th minutes. Nicki Bogaard added one more goal in the first half on an assist from Van Wyk, to put the Lady Dutch up by a commanding 5-0 score at intermission.
Pella continued to get looks at the goal in the second half, but goals were hard to come by, as a score from Kim Korver was the only shot out of 19 attempts to find the back of the net. Pella also held the Lady Indians scoreless in the second half to preserve the 6-0 victory. Pella out-shot Oskaloosa 34-2, with 14 shots on goal for the Lady Dutch. Pella also held a lopsided 7-0 advantage in corner kicks, and the goalkeeper tandem of Kelsey Fynaardt and Kirsten Maakestad had no saves.
Pella is now 8-8 overall and advances to the Regional Semifinals on Friday, when they will host Grinnell at 6:00 p.m. at the Gene Van Wyk Soccer Complex.
