Following a brief public hearing, the first reading of an ordinance dealing with off-premises signs for businesses was approved at Tuesday night’s Pella City Council meeting. The ordinance calls for each request for off-premises signs to be appealed to the council, and only if the requesting business meets specific location criteria.

In other business, the Pella City Council approved the second reading of an ordinance that would increase the speed limit on Vermeer Road from East 8th street to 240th Place at Vermeer Manufacturing from 25 to 35 miles per hour, with the exception of peak school traffic hours, which would be directed by flashing light signs.

The council also approved special event requests for the summer’s “Thursdays in Pella” events and an event for the Just Eliminate Lies or “JEL” organization, along with approval of a crosswalk near Kuyper Gymnasium at Central College. Pella City Council members also okay’ed additional parking along Main Street in front of “De Scoop” ice cream shop and appointed the following people to city boards:

Grace Eduard – Appointed to Library Board of Trustees
Bryce J. Dahm – Reappointed to Library Board of Trustees
Joan Van Hal – Reappointed to Library Board of Trustees
* Terms ending July 1, 2013

Marty Racheter – Appointed to Civil Service Board
Chris Fontana – Reappointed to Civil Service Board
* Terms ending April 1, 2014
