VA officials have locked gates on the secondary entrances at the Knoxville campus in order to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering portions of the campus, that’s according to Staff Assistant to the Director, Dave Huffman. Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada says this is something his officers have known about for some time. He says while it makes their regular drive through routes a little more difficult, the police department will continue to monitor the campus as they have in the past. Fire Chief Mike Roberts says he too thinks the impact will be minimal for his department, as they will need to use the main entrance to access the Knox Box on the campus to obtain keys to enter the buildings. They only time he foresees a problem is if there is an actual fire where they need mutual assistance and the other trucks would need to use another entrance. The main entrance on West Pleasant Street remains open and unlocked.
