Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat advises residents to shop locally for home improvements in order to prevent being scammed by illegitimate out-of-state companies. Goemaat says the sheriff’s office has received reports of fake companies going door-to-door making false promises and scamming residents out of money by underperforming the job they were hired to do. He says this is something that is typical for this time of year and other counties in Iowa are dealing with the same issue. Goemaat recommends that residents check the company’s references prior to hiring them, contact the sheriff’s office if things seem too good to be true and use a local company that has a good reputation in order to prevent being scammed.
