One of the top ten Drum and Bugle Corps in the nation is coming to Pella Wednesday night. Pella High School Band Director Dick Redman explains what people can expect from a drum and bugle corps.

“A drum and bugle corps is very similar to our high school marching band. It involves musicians on the field, marching designs and patterns on the field and playing music at the same time,” says Redman. “The difference is there are no woodwinds. It has all bugles – all brass instruments and percussion – as well as color guard. They’ll have flags, they’ll have rifles – those kinds of pieces of equipment. It’s very similar to our high school marching band.“

“The Cadets” from Allentown, Pennsylvania, travel over 20,000 miles each summer entertaining spectators across the country, and are making the stop in Pella as part of “The Cadets Experience Student Series” and the Central Iowa Color Guard Camp – which work with local high school students. Redman says it will be a great experience for students and spectators alike to have The Cadets in town for a visit.

“They are nine-time world champions, and it’s an outstanding ensemble – one of the best that the Drum Corps International (DCI) has to offer,” adds Redman. “It’s just a really great opportunity for them to be in our community, and a great opportunity for our students to not only see them perform, but also to maybe work with them and to have a little workshop with our students.”

The Cadets will perform a free exhibition at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Pella High School Athletic Complex.
