The Knoxville City Council approved the purchase of a replacement grit classifier for the wastewater treatment plant at their meeting Monday. City Manager Dick Schrad says the classifier is basically a screen that separates the solids from the wastewater and the one currently in place at the plant is made of steel and has corroded. Public Works Director Jeff May made a recommendation to approve bids from Vulcan Industries Inc. for the classifier and two grit pumps for a total of $74,400, with installation by C.L. Carroll in the amount of $21,985. The money to purchase the equipment will come from the proceeds of the 2008 bonds. Schrad says while the city will be making improvements to the wastewater treatment plant in the future these systems will remain in place.
