The Union Street Players’ second annual drama camp will conclude on Friday. The camp started on Monday and featured two sections split between first through eighth graders and provided campers with an introduction to theatre and acting, as well as a chance to develop their skills. One of the camp’s instructors, Brystal Hopkins, says she’s excited about the camp’s conclusion, which will feature the students performing an adaptation of a familiar story.

“That’s what we do for our performance on Friday night. Family and friends of the campers can come, or the public – whoever would like to come see what we do,” says Hopkins. “On Friday night, we’ll give them [the audience] a little taste of what we’ve been working on throughout the week.”

As the week-long camp draws to a close, Hopkins says she’s happy to have had the opportunity to work with the children who attended, and hopes they leave the camp with a new appreciation of theatre and the performing arts.

“I hope that – at the very least – they have an appreciation for the theatre arts when they’re done. Whether they become actors or actresses, or participate in plays later in their life or not, I hope that they at least appreciate the art and just the experience of being on stage and using their minds and bodies in that way,” added Hopkins. “It’s a very unique experience, and I’m so glad I can be a part of it.”

The closing performance of the Union Street Players Drama Camp is open to the public and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening in the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium at the Pella Community Center.
