Heavy rains over three days this past week have likely further delayed repairs to a flood release pipe on a pond on the southwest side of Pella. The damage occurred on June 12th, when rains – coupled with a failed drainage pipe – caused a large sinkhole to form on the east side of a small pond near the Gene Van Wyk Soccer Complex. Pella Public Works Director Denny Buyert says a replacement pipe has been received, but it will likely take two weeks of dry weather before his department can make the necessary repairs. A temporary drainage ditch is currently releasing excess water from the pond.
