The 50th annual Knoxville Nationals will go down in history as one of the best races in Nationals history as Pennsylvania driver Tim Shaffer won in dramatic fashion and ended Donny Schatz run of four straight Nationals wins. For the first time in it’s history, the race was 50 laps to honor the 50th anniversary and included a five minute pit stop which came at lap 25 allowing teams five minutes to make any changes they needed before returning for the final 25 laps. Sammy Swindell dominated the race leading the first 44 laps before Schatz passed him to lead lap 45. Swindell came right back to lead laps 46 and 47 and looked to have the race won, however he blew a tire taking him out of the race giving Schatz the lead with just three laps remaining. On the restart Schatz led lap 48 but Shaffer made the pass heading to the white flag and held on to the checkers to win the first Knoxville Nationals of his career. Schatz was second followed by Shane Stewart, Craig Dollansky started 24th and finished 4th and Kerry Madsen completed the top five.
